When the veins of valves function inefficiently, venous reflux occurs (as mentioned above).  This venous reflux leads to a general increase in the pressure exterted from within the veins of the lower legs, a condition called venous hypertension.  If this condition is identified early enough, steps can be taken to correct the problem and resolve, partially or completely, the varicose veins that subsequently arise from venous reflux and venous hypertension.
What is Venous Insufficiency?
If  venous reflux is left untreated, some patients may experience a gradual progression of symptoms.  What initially presents as an unsightly problem with mild symptoms may lead to leg swelling, skin discoloration, and eventually painful and potentially debilitating venous stasis ulcers.  Stages of disease progression are illustrated above.  It is important to note that not all patients experience this level of disease progression.
